Measure in this order
- Width first, inside any rails. This is where the complaints come from.
- Length second, between anything that stands proud at the ends.
- Height clearance third, if it goes into a vehicle with a lid or a shell.

The rule for between-sizes
Take the narrower one. A pad an inch too wide on a cot rides up the rails and tips you towards the middle all night. A pad an inch too narrow simply leaves an inch.
